Executive Officer's Opinion piece '...The recently released NZ Battery Project technical assessments of options for ensuring the security of supply of electricity in the event of future dry year situations recommend further work be undertaken on the bioenergy option. The assessments advise that there is potentially adequate biomass available, that there are proven technologies, and that dry year electricity supply could be available from use of existing coal power stations (Huntly), or new purpose built biomass fuelled power stations. (see details below). The biomass option would be an alternative to building Lake Onslow pumped storage scheme. Cabinet has agreed that further work needs to be done to firm up the bioenergy option by engaging with market participants....'
