Executive Officer's Opinion piece '...It is encouraging to see that the New Zealand Government has been picking up the pace in the evaluation of opportunities for creating new jobs and increasing opportunities for new business from biomass. Transitioning to a circular bioeconomy provides opportunities for new business and additional jobs. It is also an opportunity to address the waste ‘slash’ problem such as occurs in Tairawhiti where there is no use for the harvest residues. This biomass is a valuable resource which we have previously failed to turn into dollars and jobs. The devastation in Tairawhiti and Hawkes Bay is because of previous policy failures. In Tairawhiti because we haven’t put effort into how to use the biomass locally to create new bio-products, and in Hawkes Bay because we haven’t regulated land use so that hill country farmers are required to avoid erosion, planting trees is the most effective erosion control tool...'
