BC SMART Consortium/IEA Bioenergy Task 39 webinar: Decarbonizing the rail sector via the use of low carbon intensity fuel

Date:
Thursday, 12 May 2022
Where:
online

The BC-SMART Low Carbon Fuels Consortium and IEA Bioenergy Task 39 will hold their next joint, virtual webinar entitled, "Decarbonizing the rail sector via the use of low carbon intensity fuels",

Thursday, 12th May 2022 - 8:00-9:30 am PST  |  17:00-18:30 CET
Friday, 13th May 2022 - 3:00 am NZST  |  1:00 am AEST

About the webinar

Of all the long-distance transport sectors (Marine, Aviation, Rail and long-distance Trucking), rail emits the least amount of GHG emissions and provides the most efficient use of energy per tonne of freight/ passenger transported. For example, as cited in the most recent  IPCC report, although Canada’s transportation sector accounted for 217 Mt CO2e or 29.7% of Canada’s total 730 Mt GHGs, Canadian railways only accounted for 7.7 Mt of CO2e, or 1.1% of Canada’s total emissions.

However, as will be described in more detail within the webinar, the rail sector continues to assess ways to further reduce its “carbon footprint”, despite its capital-intensive nature (locomotives are long-term assets), with significant economic barriers to infrastructure and fleet replacement.

Speakers and Moderator

They will have speakers/panel members representing the International Energy Agency (IEA), U.S. Department of Energy Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO), the Railway Association of Canada (RAC) and the Renewable Energy Group (REG). Dave Schick, from the Canadian Fuels Association (CFA) will act as moderator.
