Torrefied biomass is a solid biofuel which can be used for various applications such as being co-fired with coal in existing large heat plant, pulverised coal fired power plants, in cement kilns, and for steel making.

In the torrefaction process, biomass is heated to a temperature of approx. 250-350°C in a atmosphere with low oxygen concentrations. As a consequence, all moisture is removed as well as a fraction of the volatile matter of the dry biomass.

Michael Wild will provide a general intro to thermal treatment and effects, the processes and technologies and the resulting products, trade formats, regulations and general market views.

The International Biomass Torrefaction Council (IBTC) was founded by Bioenergy Europe and resulted from the joint efforts of major torrefied biomass stakeholders who decided to create a discussion platform of companies with similar interests.
