Summary: Biomass referred to in this paper comprises fuels classified as clean biomass and contaminated biomass classified as waste. There are two EU Directives on emissions related to these two fuel types, one regarding large boilers burning solid, liquid and gaseous fuels, thus including clean biomass, and one directive dealing with combustion of waste. Besides the above mentioned directives, an Integrated Prevention and Pollution Control (IPPC) Directive requires Best Available Technique (BAT).
